Pivot locations were detected on satellite photos (grass grows in circles) and converted into a legal location for the tabular data base. Observations were made annually commencing in 1972 and ending in 1988. If a pivot appeared to be inactive, it was not included for the current year, but retained. In 1988, the pivots were digitized into the ArcInfo data base, and 'legals' were not added for the newly observed pivots. Pivot locations are accurate to within a 160 acre area.

Manual operations invite human errors, but paper plots of the pivot locations from the data base aligned 'fairly well' according to the last observer in 1989.

Process_Description:
Over a period of years CSD remote sensing staff inventoried over 33,000 center pivot systems that could be observed by satellites. They assigned a legal description to each site as observed, and tabulated the information. A computer program converted the legal into lat/long coordinates and a unique key for each pivot. The ArcInfo command GENERATE created the coverage, the command JOINITEM added the attributes from tabular files, and then the cover was PROJECTed into the CSD standard Lambert projection.
