Current Nebraska Statues require that all new water wells be registered with the Nebraska Department of Natural Resources within 60 days of completion of the well construction, except test holes and dewatering wells to be used less than 90 days or domestic or livestock wells completed prior to September 9, 1993, and soil vapor monitoring wells. Failure to register a water well is a class IV misdemeanor. The well contractor or the well owner shall complete the appropriate well registration form and file water well information with the Department, including name and address of owner, legal discription of well, intended use, completion date, pumping rate, diameter of depth of well, dimension of excavated hole, description and depth of geological materials encountered, gravel pack and other information. The well records are available at the Nebraska Department of Natural Resources. The processed water well information is also made available to public over the Internet.
The well registration data can be used as a digital layer for various studies.
Under well location, the GPS coordinates and/or footage measurements are provided. The footage measurements represents the number of feet the well is located from the edge of the section. The N represents feet north of the south edge while S represents feet south of the north edge, likewise E represents feet east of the west edge and W represents west of the east edge. More well contractors are now using GPS coordinates to calculate well location, the resolution of which may be plus or minus 15 meters.

Field data and observation values are provided by well contractors and owners at the time of registration of the water well.
Location information derived from legal descriptions were checked against the GPS coordinates, county and natural resources district numbers.
Before September 1993, domestic wells were not required to be registered. Since September 9, 1993, all wells are required to be registered except for test holes and dewatering wells with the intended use of 90 days or less.

The well driller and well owner supplies all data to Nebraska Department of Natural Resources regarding the well.
As of Janurary 1, 2002, well contractors have the option of entering the registered wells data through the internet. The well registration data is processed every night. The latitude/longitude, decimal degrees, and location coordinates in NAD 83 are calculated from the legal description and footage, if GPS coordinates are unavailable.
