Detailed Study Area Chosen For Water Supply Study

A detailed study area has been chosen for the joint Commission-Bureau of Reclama tion study "An Assessment of Nebraska's Rural Domestic and Small Communities' Wa ter Supply Problems, Needs and Alternatives". Data gathered for an area includin g all or parts of six counties in east-central Nebraska will be used to extrapol ate options, costs and other information related to meeting future water needs t o the state level. The area includes all of Hall, Hamilton and York counties and parts of Buffalo, Merrick and Clay counties (please see map).

Since a November Public Advisory Group meeting the study team members have gathe red data and completed a detailed study design as well as selected the detailed study area. The purpose of the study is to provide an analysis of the state's dr inking water problems related to ground water quality and to assess long term do mestic and small community water supply needs in light of those problems. It wil l also identify possible alternatives for meeting current and future water needs . The study is due for completion in October 1998.

Selection of a detailed study area will allow us to focus on water supply questi ons in one smaller area before extrapolating that information to provide technic al information for use in the state overall" said state study team representativ e Jerry Wallin. The next steps in the study will include information gathering f or the detailed study area, initial analysis of data, and developing potential a lternatives.
